Capacitive deionization (CDI) removes dissolved ions from water by applying a voltage across a pair of porous, high-surface-area carbon electrodes: ions are held electrostatically at the electrode surface rather than removed by a membrane barrier alone. Adding cation- and anion-exchange membranes against each electrode — membrane capacitive deionization, or MCDI — blocks co-ion leakage back into the treated stream and raises charge efficiency. Electrologic develops both halves of that pair: the electrode and the membrane.
